Efrain Almeida

Boa Viagem, CE, 1964

Miniature naked male bodies carved in wood feature strongly in Efrain Almeida's work. The sculptures are self-portraits of the artist, seeking complicity from the viewer, assuming a confessional and seductive tone. The artworks allude to the idea of ‘ex-voto’, a northeastern Brazil and religious tradition of depositing artefacts in thanks for prayers answered. The artworks also express eroticism, showing the conflicting relationship between the body and the prohibitions imposed upon it.

The statuettes of male bodies, always singular, impart an air of abandonment and loneliness, yet devoid of clothing, they also evoke the affirmation of the individual in the world.
