Artur Barrio

Rio de Janeiro, RJ, 1959

Household appliances, toys, pottery and china are the raw materials used in Barrão's sculptures. He “appropriated” these everyday objects - linked to consumerism - and ordered them together. The collages of these objects are combined in an incoherent fashion, organized by color and function. Many of these objects were bought in flea markets and bric-a-brac stores to join a large collection in his atelier.

Barrão became part of the Chelpa Ferro Group, of which artists Luiz Zerbini and Sergio Mekler were also members. Created in 1995, the group put on events with electronic music, sculptures and installations in live presentations.
